Using Brasero to backup movie DVDs to ISO files
This article was tested using Debian Jessie on a Toshiba NB520, with an ASUS external optical drive, and the 25th anniversary release of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future: The Complete Series.
Note: If youve watched even a single episode of Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future back in 1986, I highly recommend you get the 25th anniversary set. The included documentary is well-written and entertaining, and the interviews give an insight to the perils, beginnings, and pitfalls of CGI on TV.
To set up Debian Jessie for reading encrypted video:
1. Install the libdvdcss2 library by adding the VLC developer re pository or downloading the .deb file.
For instructions on adding the repository, visit http://ift.tt/X2aRtw. Once the repository is added, and the keys authenticated, update Debian repositories, and install the libdvdcss2 software package.
To download the .deb file, visit http://ift.tt/2ls5Ycu and download the package appropriate for your Debian system.
2. Depending on your Debian setup, install libdvdread4 and/or libdvdnav4.
For this example, VLC is already installed and both packages are already on the system as dependencies.
3. Insert th e DVD into your optical drive.
4. Launch Brasero, and then click Disc copy.
5. Select the DVD-ROM, and then select Image File. Specify the filename of the image if needed.
6. Click Create Image.
Once the ISO is complete, playback the ISO DVD image using a media player.
